Smart home devices, such as thermostats or automated doors and windows, have been making our lives easier in our homes for a long time. However, few would think that these technologies are able to leave the walls of our houses and bring about revolutionary changes in the world of gardens.

Smart gardens are based on four main device categories: robotic lawnmowers, irrigation systems, sensors and outdoor lighting. Each can sense the environment and/or automate garden tasks in a unique way. They can be controlled remotely via applications and with the help of smartphones, so we can gain insight into the state of our garden anywhere, at any time.

“Robotic lawnmowers are among the most popular smart garden devices,” says Magdolna Nagy, smart building expert at Hello Future founder. – “Unlike traditional lawnmowers, only the tips of the grass blades are cut, thereby promoting dense and healthy growth. The most advanced models calculate their position using wireless beacons placed in the ground, and some have built-in sensors to detect garden structures and other obstacles.”

Advanced robotic lawnmowers have rain sensors and access online weather forecasts. Users can even use voice control to start and stop the robotic lawnmower and set a schedule. Safe use is ensured by elevation and tilt sensors, which turn off the lawnmower in potentially dangerous situations.

“Smart irrigation systems use sensors to monitor the moisture content of the soil around the plants and water the garden accordingly, helping to save water,” continues the expert. -“The sprinklers are adjusted based on the soil type and sunshine, and a watering schedule is set based on the location of the garden and the vegetation.”

In addition to soil moisture sensors, data from weather forecasts is used to prevent overwatering when rain is approaching. Most of these devices replace the controller of existing irrigation systems, so we don’t have to replace the entire irrigation system if we want this smart solution for our garden. Smart irrigation systems can be controlled and controlled remotely via a phone app; they optimize the use of water, thereby helping to protect the environment and reduce the water bill.

“As we have seen with the smart irrigation system, smart devices with various sensors in the garden will warn you if the lawn and plants are drying out, if they are getting too much light, or even if the soil is not suitable for some reason. They use sensors to measure pH, temperature, light and nutrients, as well as moisture and humidity, and send the data to smartphone apps. Applications that analyze data make personalized recommendations for plant care, helping gardeners to make decisions,” explains Magdolna Nagy.

“Smart outdoor lighting can be controlled via a wireless network, an application on the phone or a smart home assistant,” explains the Hello Future expert. – “Lighting supplemented with motion sensors not only provides security, but can also create a special atmosphere in the evening hours, and can be synchronized with the home security system. Smart garden lights also have functions that allow you to control brightness and color. Supplementing them with a motion sensor can provide not only comfort, but also energy savings.”

These smart tools not only make gardening easier, but also allow us to get closer to nature while taking care of our environment in a sustainable way. An intelligent garden can become a real oasis where technology and nature live in harmony.
