Subaru has announced that it will end production of the Legacy sedan at the end of the 2025 model year as part of its strategic shift to electrify its vehicle lineup. The decision comes amid sluggish sedan sales and a broader industry trend toward SUVs and crossovers.

Introduced in 1989, the Legacy was the first Subaru model to be produced in the US, with every Legacy destined for the US being built at the Lafayette, Indiana plant. Over the past 35 years, Subaru has sold more than 1.3 million Legacy models in the country.

Citing market shifts toward SUVs and crossovers, coupled with its own transition to electrified cars, Subaru has decided to end production of the Legacy. Sales of the sedan have been weak in recent years, further motivating the decision.

With plans to introduce eight electric vehicles to its lineup by 2028, Subaru is expected to fill the gap left by the Legacy with an all-electric alternative in the near future.
