Would you buy a car with “Outsider” in its name?

Why would you name your own SUV “Outsider” unless you consider it an outsider even before you put it on the market? Subaru has patented several new trademarks and names, which it reportedly plans to use for future SUV models.

The Japanese brand has filed a patent with the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) for several names with designations that hint at models or technologies intended for off-road experiences. However, some of them sound strange.

In its patent application, Subaru explains that the names refer to “vehicles and structural parts and accessories thereof,” and the list includes: Viewfinder, Uncharted, Trailseeker, Trailhead ), Tailwind, Outsider, Hightail, Highroad, Getway, Everpass, Everguide (?), Accomplice.

It is not yet certain whether the Japanese manufacturer really plans to use all these names or just kept them so that no one else can use them. History has known a number of cases where car companies simply trademarked names for which they had no real plans.

Subaru already has a “Wilderness” trademark, which refers to models specifically designed for off-roading. These models get extra ground clearance, but also drivetrain and suspension upgrades. It’s possible the names will be used for trim levels or extra packages , for customers to choose from. But who would choose “Outsider?”

More on the topic:

  • The sports coupe will get a hybrid drive with over 300 horsepower

  • The most important model of the Japanese in Europe is seriously upgrading at the change of generations

  • This car is from a time when the Japanese brand was still searching for its identity
