Kidney stones, or what is also known as nephrolithiasis, is a condition caused by the formation of solid deposits in the kidneys. These deposits come from chemicals in the urine, such as calcium, oxalate, or uric acid.

Kidney stones also often do not show typical symptoms at first. However, there are several signs that can be early indicators of kidney stones. Quoted from various sources, here are the early symptoms of kidney stones that you need to watch out for.

1. Pain in the waist

Pain in the waist, especially in the area under the back of the ribs, is one of the most common symptoms of kidney stones. This condition is also known as renal colic.

Pain can occur due to the movement of kidney stones in the ureters, thereby blocking the flow of urine from the kidneys to the bladder.

2. Frequent urination

Even though it seems trivial, this symptom of kidney stones should not be taken lightly. This condition can occur when kidney stones have moved to the lower part of the urinary tract.

This makes people with kidney stones often want to go to the bathroom. Even though you urinate frequently, the amount of urine excreted is usually very little or not at all.

3. Urine smells and foams

Smelly and foamy urine is actually a normal thing and can happen to anyone. But if your urine always foams and gives off a very strong odor every time you urinate, then this could be a symptom of kidney stones.

This can be caused by the movement of kidney stones in the urinary tract. Kidney stones have a sharp surface so they can injure the urinary tract. If the wound becomes infected, it can cause pus which can then mix with urine when urinating. This is what makes urine smelly and foamy.

4. Anyang-angan

Dysuria, or dysuria, is a burning sensation felt when urinating. This condition can be caused by the movement of kidney stones along the urinary tract.

Apart from kidney stones, anyang-anyangan can also be caused by urinary tract infections (UTI). Therefore, consult a doctor to get a definite diagnosis and treatment.

5. Blood in the urine

Bloody urine, or hematuria, can occur when the movement of a kidney stone causes injury to the urinary tract. Blood from the wound can mix with urine, making it turn reddish in color.

6. Nausea and vomiting

Nausea and vomiting are symptoms that can be triggered by various conditions, including kidney stones. This can occur when kidney stones cause disruption to the connections between the nerves, kidneys and digestive tract.

Therefore, kidney stones can also cause stomach pain. Nausea and vomiting are the body’s way of responding to pain.
