Severe Snowstorm Paralyzes Kamchatka Peninsula, Russia (January 19, 2026)
January 19, 2026 – An unprecedented snowstorm has brought the Kamchatka Peninsula in Russia’s Far East to a standstill, causing widespread disruption and posing a threat to residents. Reports and images circulating on social media depict extraordinary snow accumulations, with drifts reaching up to three meters (nearly 10 feet) burying homes, vehicles, and infrastructure.
Access to many homes has been blocked, forcing residents to evacuate through windows. Parked cars are completely submerged, requiring extensive snow removal operations. The severity of the snowfall has led to notable travel disruptions, including road closures and flight cancellations. Reuters reports that all schools and many businesses in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky have been closed.
Tragically, local authorities have confirmed two fatalities resulting from snow falling from roofs. The city of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky is under a high avalanche warning, and authorities are actively monitoring conditions and working to ensure public safety. The Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations (EMERCOM) has deployed additional personnel and equipment to the region to assist with rescue and snow removal efforts.
