NATO boss Jens Stoltenberg believes it is more important to continue to support Ukraine with weapons than for countries to meet the 2% standard. Is NATO in panic and what are the consequences for the defense of our own territory? Rob de Wijk and CDA Member of Parliament Derk Boswijk share their vision at Op1.

Send as much military equipment as possible to Ukraine, even if this means breaking the 2% standard, says NATO’s Jens Stoltenberg. Is that a good idea or NATO panic football?

NATO member states must send more military equipment to Ukraine, even if this means temporarily exceeding the 2% standard for defense spending. Jens Stoltenberg, NATO Secretary General, justified this urgent call by saying that support for Ukraine is crucial, even if it means countries deviate from their own minimum military supplies.

North Korea is better for Russia than we are for Ukraine

CDA MP Derk Boswijk understands the NATO boss’s call. He sees Russia becoming increasingly stronger and, according to him, this is also due to the country’s allies. “North Korea and Iran are better allies of Russia than we are of Ukraine,” the MP said. Defense expert Rob de Wijk sees this as the problem. “We simply do not have the defense industrial base in Europe in order.” De Wijk seriously wonders whether this will be okay in a few years at the current pace. “At this pace and with all the hassle between capitals, things will not be in order in three to five years.

Terrible dilemma

“It’s a huge gamble,” De Wijk continues about what he considers the ‘terrible’ dilemma. “But you also have to save things for when things go completely wrong. Support for Ukraine is extremely important, because if you don’t, Russia can make gains. If you do, you will erode your own defense force. It is a huge dilemma.”
