Sweden soon became a member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization or NATO. Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson is in the United States (US) to submit a number of final documents.

The White House openly welcomes Sweden’s joining NATO. The White House said Sweden officially became a member of NATO on Thursday (7/3/2024) local time.

“Having Sweden as a NATO ally will make the United States and our allies safer,” said a statement from the White House. .

On his X social media, Swedish Prime Minister Kristersson said that NATO Secretary General Jen Stoltenberg had provided information regarding the final stages of Sweden’s joining NATO. Sweden will become NATO’s 32nd member.

“Sweden will soon become NATO’s 32nd member,” Kristersson said on X.

Sweden’s joining NATO occurred in the midst of the war between Russia and Ukraine which has been going on for the last 2 years. Sweden’s entry as a NATO ally is considered to be a blow to Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Sweden will receive a number of benefits after officially joining NATO. Any attack on Sweden would be considered an attack on all NATO members.

“We have to face a world that we sometimes don’t expect,” Kristersson said after Hungary became the last NATO member to ratify Sweden’s accession last week.

NATO currently contains 31 member countries, namely Albania, Belgium, Bulgaria, Canada, Croatia, Czechia, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Montenegro, Netherlands, Macedonia North, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Turkey, United Kingdom and United States.
