Tairāwhiti Police Conclude New Year operation: Arrests Made, Road Safety Enforced
Following a busy New Year period overseeing over 20,000 attendees at the Rhythm and Vines festival and proactively monitoring for potential illegal gatherings, Tairāwhiti Police have announced the conclusion of their new Year operation. The operation resulted in multiple arrests and the issuance of infringement notices throughout the region.
Area Commander danny Kirk reported a particularly demanding few days for officers. While the vast majority of festival-goers behaved responsibly,police addressed several incidents requiring intervention.
Key Operation Results
Here’s a breakdown of the operation’s key outcomes:
* Arrests: four individuals were arrested at Rhythm and Vines for offenses including drug supply, breaches of bail, possession of an offensive weapon, and threatening behavior. An additional arrest occurred in Mahia on New Year’s Eve for breaching bail conditions.
* Road Safety: Approximately 12,000 drivers were breath-tested, wiht 25 found to be in violation of driving regulations.
* Anti-Social Behavior Prevention: Police successfully prevented a planned large gathering linked to dangerous driving, deploying the Police Eagle helicopter from Auckland to provide aerial support and rapid response capabilities.
* Vehicle Impoundments & Charges: One vehicle received a non-operation order, and two were impounded. One individual faces charges related to driving offenses and will appear in the Gisborne District court.
* Infringement Notices: Multiple infringement notices were issued for various offenses,contributing to overall road safety and public order.
The deployment of the Police Eagle helicopter proved crucial in deterring and responding to potential anti-social road behavior. Kirk confirmed that plans for a significant, unauthorized gathering were “successfully thwarted” thanks to proactive policing.
Despite the preventative measures, one individual was arrested for breaching bail, and several infringement notices were issued for related offenses.
