Deadly Crash in Tampa‘s Ybor City Leaves Four Dead, Eleven Injured
A tragic incident unfolded in Tampa’s vibrant Ybor City neighborhood early Saturday morning, resulting in four fatalities and eleven injuries. The devastating crash occurred following a police pursuit and has left the community reeling.
Tampa Police Chief Lee Bercaw detailed the events, which began shortly after 12:40 a.m. Two vehicles were initially observed racing westbound on Hillsborough Avenue toward Interstate 275.One vehicle disengaged,while the other – a silver 2019 toyota Camry – continued southbound on I-275 before exiting into the downtown area.
The Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) initiated a traffic stop, but the Camry fled. Later, FHP attempted a precision immobilization technique (PIT) maneuver, designed to safely end the pursuit by causing the vehicle to spin out. Unfortunately, this initial attempt was unsuccessful, and the FHP discontinued the active pursuit.
However, the situation escalated dramatically. The camry continued at a high speed down 7th Avenue, ultimately colliding with a crowd just east of 15th Street. This occurred outside Bradley’s on 7th, a popular bar in Ybor City known for its lively nightlife and tourist activity.
The impact was catastrophic. Three individuals died at the scene, and a fourth succumbed to their injuries at a local hospital. Currently, one victim remains hospitalized in critical condition. Eight others are receiving treatment at area hospitals and are listed as stable, while two individuals with minor injuries declined medical attention at the scene.
Chief Bercaw emphasized the heartbreaking nature of the tragedy. All victims were adults over the age of 20, simply enjoying an evening out. A reckless driver’s actions irrevocably altered their lives and the lives of countless others.
Silas Sampson, a 22-year-old man from Dade City, Florida, has been taken into custody as the suspected driver. He is currently being held at the Hillsborough County Jail. Sampson faces four counts each of vehicular homicide and aggravated fleeing to elude, resulting in serious bodily injury and/or death. Additional felony charges are anticipated as the examination progresses.
