Tesla and SpaceX have formally announced plans to construct a massive semiconductor manufacturing complex named Terafab in Grimes County, Texas, north of Houston. The initial phase of the project requires an investment of $16.8 billion, with total spending potentially climbing as high as $119 billion across multiple build-out phases according to company filings.

Elon Musk, who serves as chief executive of both companies, described the facility on social media as the largest and most valuable building on Earth by far.
The project was originally unveiled in March at Austin’s Seaholm Historic Power Plant as a joint venture involving Tesla, SpaceX, and xAI, with Austin’s Giga Texas campus initially considered as the build site before the companies relocated the project to Grimes County. Construction on the Terafab is expected to begin in the coming months.
Vertical Integration and Massive Scale
The completed campus is planned to encompass more than 100 million square feet of manufacturing space, making it roughly 10 times larger than Tesla’s existing Gigafactory Texas. Unlike conventional semiconductor facilities that separate operations across different locations, Terafab is designed as a vertically integrated campus where advanced logic devices, memory chips, packaging, and testing operations are housed together under one roof.
According to Tomshardware, the first stage of the plan is expected to utilize Intel’s 14A process technology. Intel has stated it will contribute to the project. Company officials explain that consolidating logic, memory, packaging, and testing in a single location will shorten the production cycle and accelerate time-to-yield through faster iterative improvements.
Powering Optimus Robots, Cybercabs, and Orbital Data Centers
The facility’s primary mission is to supply advanced processors for artificial intelligence workloads across Musk’s companies, addressing a projected combined demand that is expected to exceed 1 terawatt of compute per year. Both companies argue that current global chip manufacturing capacity cannot support their future requirements.
Terafab is specifically envisioned to produce AI inference processors and edge computing hardware for Tesla Optimus humanoid robots and Cybercab autonomous vehicles, alongside high-power processors intended for SpaceX’s space-based data centers. To support the massive energy needs of the facility, Riley Trettel, who oversees energy and data center development for SpaceX, stated during a public meeting in Grimes County that the company plans to build its own natural gas-fired power plants and very large battery arrays.
Local Economic Impact and Environmental Measures
The project is expected to create at least 3,000 jobs, with a significant share of employees recruited from Grimes County and neighboring Brazos County. Anderson-Shiro Consolidated Independent School District Superintendent Dr. Sarah Borowicz noted that the school district will work closely with the companies to prepare students for future opportunities according to a statement released by the Texas Governor’s office.
To address environmental concerns raised by local residents during public meetings regarding water usage, SpaceX has committed to drawing water from the nearby Gibbons Creek Reservoir instead of competing with the surrounding region for local groundwater. The site will also feature its own on-site water treatment and reuse systems, with industrial waste and chemicals managed under strict environmental requirements.
