Sadiq Khan has been re-elected as London’s mayor, starting his third term as the city’s leader. Khan won 43.8 percent of the vote, while his opponent, Susan Hall, launched by the governing Conservative Party, received 32.7 percent.

Khan described the race between himself and the conservative Hall as close. Compared to 2021, according to London Elects, voter participation in the election has decreased by only 1.5 percent. The Labor party that fielded Khan became confident of victory hours before the final result after it was revealed that they were able to take several other constituencies from the Conservatives.

The fall of the Conservatives was interesting in this year’s election if only because they introduced changes to the electoral system that they believed would harm the Labor Party. So was the new rule requiring people to go to the polls with a photo ID: the Electoral Commission had previously warned people that the law could disqualify hundreds of thousands of people from voting, which could have a disproportionate impact on the results. In the end, the law also worked for the conservatives, for example the conservative Boris Johnson for the first time could not vote for his own party.

A Conservative MP from London criticized Hall’s campaign after the election, who did not promise concrete things to voters, instead focusing on anti-Khan.

The result in London came after the Labor Party won several victories in the North of England as well: they gave mayors to, for example, Liverpool and Greater Manchester. On Friday, the first results already indicated significant seat losses for the ruling Conservative Party.
