An Asian country has been hit by an extreme heat wave, with daytime temperatures exceeding 40 degrees Celsius and 30 degrees Celsius at night.

Authorities in Thailand urged residents to stay indoors during the day.

“The Department of Health urges the population to stay indoors and avoid outdoor activities due to the risk of sunstroke,” the Pattaya Mai publication reported on Wednesday, according to Agerpres.

“With maximum temperatures between 41 and 42 degrees Celsius in the northern, northeastern and central regions, and 39-40 degrees Celsius in the eastern and southern regions, including Bangkok, staying indoors is paramount for safety” , the release states.

Tourists get special sun protection at popular destinations, including Ayutthaya’s temple complexes, while residents walk the streets with parasols and fans.

Temperatures have been above normal since last month in many areas. The weather bureau has warned that this summer, which begins in Thailand at the end of February, could be two degrees warmer than usual.

There are fears that the heat index, which measures how a temperature feels, taking into account ambient air temperature, relative humidity and wind speed, could reach over 50 degrees.
