How long can healthcare be called healthcare? And what kind of care should one stop giving patients?

These are questions that Hanna Kataoka, president of the Medical Association at Sahlgrenska University Hospital in Gothenburg, asks herself in an interview with Aftonbladet.

Perhaps it is not so strange that she thinks about the matter. Sahlgrenska must save SEK 1.7 billion, which is equivalent to 2,000 employees and which can seriously endanger patient safety.

– We have had too few resources for healthcare and must do something about it, says Lars Calmfors, professor emeritus of economics to Läkartidningen.

But it is not only in Västra Götaland that Swedish healthcare is forced into dangerous waters.

5300 jobs at risk

In total, more than a third of the country’s regions are expected to reduce the number of healthcare workers in 2024. In total, there are 5,300 positions that are in the danger zone. The situation is not expected to improve until 2026.

The question is how long Finance Minister Elisabeth Svantesson (M) and the rest of the Tidö gang can starve the regions in this way. SEK 24 billion is missing and anger is bubbling across the country.

But now the dissatisfaction is not only simmering among the healthcare workers. The patience of the common people is also starting to run out.

Most important election issue

A new survey conducted by Indikator opinion for Ekot shows that healthcare is now the most important issue for voters.

Many probably remember the election campaign in 2022. Falo sausages, energy prices and law and order were at the center of all the debate. Healthcare did not receive quite as much attention.

In retrospect, it may seem strange, as healthcare was actually the issue that was most important to voters even before the election.

“Health care is a matter for the regions, not for the government”, some of you might grumble. Partly that is true. But there is also every opportunity in the world for the government to push money to the regions through increased state subsidies.

Curious Svantesson

– I don’t want to be forced to investigate what consequences these savings will have, says Hanna Kataoka at Sahlgrenska.

She is not alone in not wanting to know. The only one who seems to be curious about looking at that door is Elisabeth Svantesson.

  • When it comes to fuel prices, it is extremely important to the government that even people in the countryside should be able to live. But when it comes to the financing of care, school and care, it is perfectly fine for the government that taxes in regions and municipalities should be increased. It obviously affects the countryside more, which already has higher taxes and poorer service.

A krone in reduced petrol prices was great! But if nothing else works, I don’t know what it’s worth.

  • As a newly diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis, I am very worried.. Will I get the care I need tomorrow, in a month, or in a year?

Sad to hear. And I wish there was a clear answer about short wait time to that question.

  • Must raise the salary in health care And it would be good if we who work in health care work 6 hours. A nurse who has worked for 10 years has a salary of SEK 28,000 before tax

    Lisa

Yes! Healthcare needs to be made more attractive as a workplace.

  • The moderates’ wet dream is that healthcare will become as expensive and unequal as in the US, so this is just the beginning.

    Henke

Last week, Timbro was out and argued that money should not be given to the regions. So I’m afraid you’re right.
