The dilapidated infrastructure leads to a power outage

A power outage plunged several neighborhoods of Antananarivo into darkness from late Thursday afternoon until Friday morning. This interruption occurred at the level of the Antananarivo Interconnected Network (RIA). “The RIA was taken out of service around 5 p.m. on Thursday. Repair work has been undertaken. During tests, a high voltage cable break was noted at Ambatomaro, which supplies the Ambodivona station. Due to the obsolescence of the installations, this led to an interruption of the electricity supply in the districts of Ivandry, Ambohimanarina, among others,” declared Manda Ny Aina Nomena, head of Electricity Production at Jirama , yesterday.

This interruption was particularly long. It was not until Friday morning that several neighborhoods were resupplied. Jirama explains this situation by the complexity of the repair work, in particular the need to negotiate with the owners of the houses where these cables pass.

This cut did not only affect the neighborhoods supplied by the Ambodivona station. Jirama customers in the South zone, notably in Andoharanofotsy, Soanierana, Ampitatafika up to Arivonimamo, also complained of a long power cut. “We had to supply Ambodivona with the Tanà Sud station. Distribution has not kept pace with needs,” added a technician.

Electricity supply returned to normal yesterday morning. Jirama specifies that there is no load shedding in the RIA at the moment, but this could return soon, according to the explanations of the head of Electricity Production at Jirama.
