The Egyptian Medicines Authority revealed the importance of vitamin D, which helps regulate the amount of calcium and phosphorus in the body, and is necessary for maintaining healthy bones, teeth, and muscles.
Regarding the sources of vitamin D, the FDA said: The body forms vitamin D from direct sunlight on the skin when it is outdoors, and it is also available in a small number of foods, such as: oily fish (salmon, sardines, herring, and mackerel), red meat, and liver. Egg yolks, and fortified foods – such as some fats and ready-to-breakfast cereals
The Egyptian Medicines Authority added that the daily dose needed by a child from one year old and adults is 10 micrograms of vitamin D daily. This includes pregnant and breastfeeding women, and people at risk of vitamin D deficiency.
Children up to one year old also need 8.5 to 10 micrograms of vitamin D daily.
She continued: Vitamin D deficiency leads to bone deformities, such as rickets in children, and bone pain resulting from a condition called osteomalacia in adults.
