Jakarta – Who doesn’t know the glittering city Las Vegas, Nevada. Las Vegas is very famous for its luxury, casinos and nightlife. However, it turns out that this city has a dark side that not many people know about. Who would have thought that behind the glittering city of Las Vegas, many of its residents were homeless and lived in tunnels for years.
According to statistical data, there are around 550,000 homeless people in America. Reportedly this number has increased in recent years as a result of the opioid crisis and the coronavirus pandemic.
Under the lights and tall buildings in Las Vegas, there are several flood control tunnels inhabited by homeless people there.
This tunnel is usually dry because it is in Las Vegas it only rains a few times a year. In contrast to the luxurious world above, this tunnel looks very dirty and dark. The homeless people who live here usually make their homes at the end of the tunnel using makeshift cloth and tarpaulin.
In this tunnel hundreds of kilometers long, there are around 1,500 people living there, one of whom is a man named Big T. According to the NZZ page, Big T has lived in the tunnel for 12 years.
When the weather is predicted to rain, the tunnel residents will get ready to look for a safe place. When it rains, it doesn’t take long for the water to fill the tunnel, and quite a few people have drowned.
Furthermore, the people who lived in the darkness of these tunnels mostly came from criminal backgrounds, and many also used illegal drugs. Therefore, it is not uncommon for the police to come to raid and clean the tunnels where these people live.
There are five tunnel entrances near the Rio hotel, Las Vegas, each guarded by different people. The conditions in the tunnel are far from clean, the people there live with waste from the hotel which is dangerous for the skin.
The bed was covered in car batteries and there were lots of mice running around. They also depended on the guards above whose job it was to warn them when it was raining so they could find a safe place.
