She added, quoting private sources, that the Israeli government may meet on Wednesday to take a decision on resuming negotiations.

The negotiations had faltered in Cairo after Hamas said it had agreed to an Egyptian proposal, while Israel said that what the movement agreed to was a modified proposal that was unacceptable to it.

As Israeli operations continued in Gaza, witnesses told the Arab World News Agency that the Israeli army continued to invade the eastern part of the city of Rafah in the south of the Strip, amid intense raids on the city center as well. Witnesses reported that the Israeli army blew up many buildings in eastern Rafah.

In Khan Yunis, also in the south of the Gaza Strip, the Israeli army targeted the town of Al-Qarara with a series of air strikes.

On October 7, Hamas launched an attack on Israel, killing 1,170 people, most of them civilians, according to a census conducted by Agence France-Presse based on official Israeli figures.

During the attack, more than 250 people were kidnapped, 128 of whom are still detained in Gaza, and 36 of them died, according to Israeli officials.

In response to the attack, Israel pledged to eliminate Hamas, and the Israeli army has since carried out a devastating bombing campaign and ground operations in the Gaza Strip, causing more than 35,000 deaths, most of them civilians, according to the Gaza Ministry of Health.
