The dönerkebaben is in danger.

It may receive protected status.

Turkey has applied for EU protection, SVT reports.

Do you like doner kebab with mixed sauce? In the near future it may disappear.

At least the name.

Turkey has applied for EU protection for the döner kebab. This is reported by SVT.

Like Italian Neapolitan pizza, French champagne or Swedish Kalixlöjrum, Turkey now wants the country’s classic döner kebab to receive the same EU protection.

No sauce and thin slices

One of the reasons why Turkey wants the EU to protect the döner kebab may be financial interests, according to SVT’s correspondent in Istanbul.

For example, it is unthinkable to eat kebabs with sauce in Turkey.

In addition to serving the food without sauce, the proposal also includes instructions on how thin the meat slices should be. The chicken meat must be 1–2 centimeters, while the slices of beef and lamb must be between 3 and 5 millimeters thick. There are also guidelines for a döner kebab to contain a certain layer of onion and fat, according to SVT.

If the proposal goes through, an EU standard will be created for what can be called döner kebab.

Something that restaurants in such cases must live up to.
