The most chaotic elections in Latvian sports. How LFF prepared for the elections in 2020

On Friday, April 26, Latvia’s richest sports federations will take place – Latvian Football Federation (LFF) – an electoral congress, where the members have to choose the president of the organization and eight other board members. In four years, the LFF has seemingly normalized the situation in football, which was previously characterized by various crises and emergency congresses. However, in four years, LFF has not made public all the information about the 2020 elections and there is still no clarity about one of the most scandalous elections in the history of Latvian sports associations.

Even before the 2024 elections, LFF refused to make public the information provided by the candidates for the upcoming elections and the 2020 elections regarding the support of their members. Only the total number of members’ support received has been made public, but it is not possible to verify the correctness of the submitted documents.

If the LFF Electoral Committee had invited the candidates to clarify the submitted documents even before announcing the decision, then the continuation would probably have been much smoother. However, in the first decision of the Election Committee on April 8, only three candidates were admitted to the elections – Andis Rozītis, Viktorija Mihalčukas and Emils Latkovskis, all of whom wanted to work on the board (and were later elected).

On the other hand, the rest of the candidates were then divided into two parts – some were allowed to clarify their applications, others’ applications were recognized as inappropriate.
