A ticket to the Paternoster lift in the New Town Hall building of the Prague Municipality on Mariánské náměstí will cost tourists about 250 CZK. The city company Prague City Tourism (PCT) will take care of the elevator, which will also organize guided tours. This follows from the information document that the Prague councilors had on the agenda of Monday’s meeting.
Last April, the municipality shut down the elevator due to the rush of tourists who came to see the technical monument, rode in it, destroyed it and made noise in the corridors of the municipality. Subsequently, the office had the premises modified so that people could not reach other parts of the building from the elevator.
“The basic price of the ticket is 250 CZK, while this can be changed on the basis of a unilateral written notice from the provider, which will become an integral part of the contract,” the document reads. Revenues from ticket sales will primarily serve to cover the costs of providing services. If the PCT earns more from the sale than the costs, it will pay the municipality 20 percent of this amount.

Páternoster appeared in the Honest Guide video guide to Prague a few years ago. Around that time, the number of tourists who went to the publicly accessible town hall building in search of an interesting technical monument began to increase. The tourists did not respect the safety instructions and the excessive load destroyed the lift. The presence of a large number of people in the building complicated the operation of the town hall, it was not unusual for tens of people to gather at the elevator during the day, some wandered around the building and then entered individual offices.
According to the document, the PCT will be in charge of guided guided tours, ticket sales and the business and marketing side of the Paternoster’s visitor operations.

A Páternoster is a type of elevator with a continuous chain of cabins. The world’s first circular elevator was installed by workers in 1884 in London. Páternosters are now no longer classified as elevators, but as other machinery. They are therefore not covered by the lift standards and can continue to be in use. There are more paternosters preserved in Prague, in addition to the municipality, for example, in the Prague 1 City Hall building in Vodičková street, in several ministry buildings, in the Czech Radio headquarters in Vinohradská street or in the Škoda Palace in Jungmannová street.
