The outlet that sells Amazon leftovers at low cost prices has arrived in Portugal

Surprise boxes are the new trend at Remates Store, which resells several products from e-commerce giants.

What if you could buy a robot vacuum cleaner or a cell phone for just five or ten euros? All this in a surprise box at low cost prices? The concept is not new, but it finally arrived in Portugal on February 16th. The madness had already arrived in Spain — as NiT explained in November — and now there is a national counterpart, Remates Store.

The company, in Lousada, buys large quantities of items from Amazon and AliExpress, blindly, without knowing their content, and then resells them for five or ten euros. “These are lost orders that never reach the recipient or are returned by the buyer”, explains Tânia Matos, one of those responsible for the warehouse to “IOL”.

With warehouses full, e-commerce giants are unable to sell products and end up selling them to smaller companies. “We usually receive pallets on Fridays. Therefore, until Sunday, our customers find the store very full”, says Tânia. After receiving the pallets full of packaging, they place them in other boxes. Not even those responsible know the contents of each package.

However, in addition to the surprise packages, larger items are also on display at the Remates Store, such as toys, furniture, household appliances, game consoles or bicycles — they undergo an assessment by those responsible and if they are 100 percent functional, they are sold to half of the real market value.

Although there is still only one store in the entire country, the brand is working on an expansion plan. Online sales are not a reality for now, but the person responsible states that the website is under development and that this option could be available in the near future.
