Catering company Het Paleis aan het Boterdiep in Groningen is bankrupt. The tax debt incurred during corona time is killing the hotel, brasserie and conference room.

The corona crisis is over, but not for Het Paleis. Like so many companies, the catering company at Boterdiep received help from the government to get through the crisis.

Governments regularly met in Het Paleis

The company can no longer overcome the tax debt that has accrued as a result, says curator Martin Schuring. “There are some other debts, but the tax debt is the main one.”

The entire catering company is involved in the bankruptcy. The Palace consists of a brasserie, a hotel with ten rooms and conference rooms. The largest conference room can accommodate 200 people. The conference rooms were often booked by governments or government-affiliated institutions.

There is interest in a restart

According to Schuring, Het Paleis was founded after the corona crisis. “The business was doing quite well.”

The curator expects that a restart for Het Paleis is possible. There is already interest in it, he says. Schuring calls Het Paleis a sympathetic and atypical catering complex. ,,Why? Due to the unusual combination of hotel, brasserie and conference rooms. And you don’t see the design of the hotel rooms everywhere.”
