Automobile buyers are increasingly pushing back against modern vehicle technology, trading sleek touchscreens and mandatory driver-assistance features for physical buttons and older models, according to recent reporting by The Wall Street Journal.
While touchscreen interfaces and automated safety chimes long served as primary selling points for new vehicle sales, a subset of drivers is actively seeking out older engineering. This shift has prompted some major automotive manufacturers to rethink cabin ergonomics and reintroduce tactile controls, even as regulatory bodies in Europe mandate advanced safety tech.
Drivers Combat Touchscreens and Digital Dashboards
For some motorists, the continuous stream of alerts and menu-driven climate controls has created an ergonomic hurdle rather than an upgrade. The Wall Street Journal highlighted a computer specialist from St. Louis who maintains a spreadsheet to track modern car technologies—not to select desired features, but to catalog what he actively wishes to avoid. Alongside his sons, he maintains four vehicles manufactured in the 2010s to keep them operational as long as possible.
In another instance reported by the publication, an 85-year-old buyer of a new Toyota RAV4 expressed frustration with the vehicle’s digital instrument cluster and driver-assistance systems. To create tactile reference points and locate functions without taking his eyes off the road, the driver placed pieces of tape directly onto the screen. He subsequently wrote to Toyota’s American division suggesting a simplified trim level designed for experienced drivers, stripped of excessive digital displays and alerts.
These examples represent a minority of motorists, and The Wall Street Journal notes no broad consumer boycott of new vehicles has materialized. However, consumer complaints regarding screen-heavy interiors have steadily mounted.
Automakers and Regulators Respond to Ergonomic Backlash
Vehicle manufacturers are gradually altering their interior designs to address these complaints. Mazda maintains a reputation among traditionalists for retaining physical buttons and a central rotary controller. Meanwhile, American manufacturer Slate has integrated minimalism into its electric pickup truck design, featuring a base configuration without an audio system and manual crank windows for the side doors, as noted by The Wall Street Journal.
European manufacturers are also adjusting course. Volkswagen replaced physical buttons with capacitive touch surfaces on the Golf 8 and early ID-series electric vehicles, a design choice the company later acknowledged went too far. Newer Volkswagen models are steadily restoring physical controls for primary functions. Concurrently, Euro NCAP incorporated the presence of physical controls for core functions into its vehicle safety rating criteria.
Nissan executive Ivan Espinosa noted a persistent industry paradox to The Wall Street Journal: automakers frequently pack the most complex technologies into high-end, expensive models, whose older buyers often express the least interest in intricate digital interfaces. Espinosa suggested advanced tech might find a more natural fit among younger demographics purchasing entry-level vehicles.
The Regulatory Divergence Between the US and Europe
Political and regulatory approaches to vehicle technology are diverging sharply across the Atlantic. In the United States, discussions around vehicle simplification gained high-level attention when U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy expressed support for the concept of a simplified “Freedom Car,” intended to offer buyers greater autonomy regarding connectivity and driver-assist suites.
Conversely, regulatory frameworks in Europe mandate extensive driver-assistance systems. Under GSR2, new vehicles must incorporate mandatory safety features, including intelligent speed assistance and driver drowsiness monitoring.
While manufacturers can simplify dashboard layouts and restore physical buttons, newly manufactured vehicles cannot legally omit these mandated safety assistants. Because many of these systems automatically re-activate upon every vehicle startup—even if drivers temporarily disable them through touchscreen menus—automakers increasingly implement shortcut paths to help motorists manage the alerts, highlighting a persistent irony where modern software must be accessed to minimize digital intrusion.
