Scammers have found a new way to try to steal money from unwary people’s accounts. It’s called “spoofing” and it means masking your identity.

Criminals can trick us into thinking we are being called by the bank we have an account with, the police, or even a number we have in our phonebook.

The National Directorate of Cyber Security issued an alert after hundreds of people, victims of cyber crimes, were called by the same authority.

The list of dupes was already on the Internet, and hackers were trying to get additional data to access their accounts.

Lavinia Petrea: ”Let’s say I’m now called by a cybercriminal. He wants me to believe that I am being called by the bank I have an account with. The identity of the bank appears on my phone, and if I checked the number I would find out that it is a declared number of the bank. How can I protect myself in this situation? I decline the call and initiate the conversation by typing the phone number myself”.

Cristian Iosub, cyber security specialist: ”If the phone number is saved in the victim’s address book with a name, that name will be displayed. It doesn’t just show my phone number, the mobile further interprets the information showing what it should show based on the phone number”.

This way of masking identity is called spoofing and cannot be combated in any way at this time.

Mihai Rotariu, DNSC representative: ”It’s an attack that uses one hundred percent of what we call social engineering. Someone calls you and convinces you by giving you a scenario over the phone to give certain data”.

Those who have already been cheated once are sure victims

The easiest people to fall into the net are people who have already been victims and have run out of money in their account after communicating personal data. I think they are called to help.

Mihai Rotariu, DNSC representative: ”Once you’ve been scammed, you’re basically put on a payer’s list, and the attackers know you’re likely to either fall for the trap or pay a certain amount of money”.

Along with spoofing, criminals can also use artificial intelligence, which can alter the caller’s voice.

Cristian Iosub: ”Human voice can also be cloned now, you can call as the attacker, you can call a victim pretending to be her mother, for example, with her mother’s voice and a man on the other end”.

Cybercriminals want to know your full name, IBAN and the last 6 digits of your PIN. With this data they then manage to get into your account and leave you without money. So don’t give out any data during a suspicious call.
