The large-scale Russian operations starting in October 2023 progressed slowly at first, achieving minor territorial gains in the siege of the city. It was clear from the beginning that the Russians were trying to encircle the settlement, thereby completely encircling the Ukrainian defenders. Despite the efforts, this idea did not succeed, but the defense lines were breached in several places elsewhere. This gave the Russians the opportunity to make smaller enclosures.
One such opportunity arose from the south, where the attackers pushed into Avgyivka.
Since the Russians also achieved a breakthrough in areas parallel to this, it became a realistic possibility to encircle the defenders in the southern sector.
The Ukrainian military leadership has been saying for a long time that the situation in the eastern Ukrainian city is very serious. Ammunition is selling more and more, while it is not yet clear when the shipments from America will arrive. Moscow took advantage of the wavering in several places, for example, they managed to cut Avgyiivka in two yesterday, so that there is only one route into the city – easily attacked and very difficult to walk. This poses huge challenges to the remaining Ukrainian defenses. There is no reliable information on how many Ukrainian soldiers are still in the settlement.
