The US Senate failed to pass the 118 billion dollar (HUF 42,000 billion) package of laws that would have provided huge sums of money to Ukraine, Israel and some to Palestine as well, reports CNN. A majority of 60 people in the 100-member Senate should have supported the proposal, but it was not accepted by 49 votes to 50.

The bill would have pooled large sums of money to protect the U.S. southern border and would have given the president broad authority to crack down on crossings. According to American politicians, this is necessary because a record number of immigrants are entering the country illegally.

In addition, they would have given:

  • 60 billion dollars (more than HUF 20,000 billion) in military aid to Ukraine;
  • 14 billion dollars (five thousand billion forints) in military aid to Israel;
  • and 10 billion dollars (HUF 3,600 billion) in humanitarian aid to Ukraine, the Gaza Strip and the West Bank.

The salad law was developed jointly by the two parties in principle, but in the end:

  • only 45 Democratic and 4 Republican senators voted for it;
  • while 45 Republicans, 4 Democrats and one independent senator opposed it.

Although earlier it looked like the Republicans also supported the bill, at the last moment most of them did not vote for it because they did not think it would do enough to settle the situation at the border. Trump vehemently criticized the law, which may have unnerved some Republicans. Bernie Sanders, an independent social democrat, did not vote for the bill because he does not support the United States helping Israel with weapons in its war against the Palestinians.

After the vote, they began to discuss separating the Mexican border and foreign aid sections of the law, hoping to reach an agreement on the latter.
