Belarus will join the second phase of Russian military exercises involving the use of tactical nuclear weapons, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced on Thursday in Moscow.

“Since there are no strategic nuclear weapons stationed on the territory of Belarus, this time we offered it to our friends and allies, and the Belarusian president also asked them to participate in one of the stages of the exercise. We regularly hold such events,” said the Russian president.

“This time we are keeping them in three stages. In the second stage, the Belarusian colleagues will join our joint actions, we have issued the relevant instructions to the ministries of defense and the general staff,” Putin added.

Aljakszandr Lukasenka Belarusian leader announced that Belarusian soldiers will take part in such an exercise for the third time.

Sergei Ryabkov Russia’s deputy foreign minister told reporters on Thursday that Moscow has not changed its nuclear doctrine, but is warning the United States and the West that its course to escalate tensions will force it to strengthen its nuclear deterrent.

Moscow deployed tactical nuclear weapons in Belarus in 2023, maintaining full control over them.

Putin stated in an interview in mid-March: Russia is ready to use nuclear weapons only if the existence of the Russian state is at stake or if the country’s sovereignty and independence may be harmed.
