Teh 60th Berliner Theatertreffen, one of the most vital theater festivals in the German-speaking world, has announced its selection of productions for 2024. Swiss and Austrian highlights
Two productions from Switzerland and Austria have been notably lauded by the jury. the Basel production of Tennessee Williams’s The Glass Menagerie was described as “a quiet, sign-rich, touching work.” The jury praised director Jaz Woodcock-Steward’s staging for its contemporary energy while remaining faithful to the play’s 1930s setting. SRF reports on the selection.
The Zurich dramatization of Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa’s Il Gattopardo, by Pinar Karabulut and hannah Schünemann, was celebrated as a lavish theatrical event. The jury highlighted the opulent sets and costumes, as well as the ensemble’s strong psychological performances, which effectively transported the audience to 19th-century Sicily.
