Palestinian military group, Hamascondemned the United States (US) attacks on Iraq and Syria and said the incident was like pouring ‘oil on the fire’ in the Middle East.

Hamas in its English language statement as reported AFP wrote that the US ‘bears responsibility for the consequences of its brutal aggression against Iraq and Syria, like pouring oil on the fire’.

“We ensure that this region will not witness stability or peace except by stopping the Zionist (Israeli) aggression and its crimes of genocide and ethnic cleansing against our people in the Gaza Strip,” wrote the statement.

The US has launched air strikes against Iran-backed armed groups in Iraq and Syria. The US has vowed to carry out further strikes in retaliation for a drone strike that killed three US soldiers in Jordan.

The US military said it attacked 85 target points in seven different locations in Iraq and Syria.

The attacks killed at least 23 pro-Iran fighters in Syria according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights which monitors the war. Meanwhile in Iraq, 16 people were killed, including civilians, the Baghdad government said.

US and allied forces have been attacked more than 165 times in Iraq, Syria and Jordan since mid-October by Iran-backed armed groups. This attack was sparked by the US’s stance in supporting Israel over the war in Gaza.
