There is something you can do!

Berlin (ots) –

Osteoporosis is not only widespread, with around 6.3 million people affected in Germany, but also has far-reaching consequences for those affected:[1] One in three women and one in five men over the age of 50 suffers a bone fracture due to osteoporosis.[2] If you know your risk of fracture, you can discuss this with your doctor. Then it is important to consider whether bone-strengthening measures or, if necessary, drug therapy make sense.

Bones are in a constant process of remodeling in which old bone substance is replaced by new ones.[3] In osteoporosis, the relationship between bone formation and bone loss is disturbed. Due to the loss of bone substance, the bones lose their strength and can break in the event of a normally harmless fall or a slightly stronger load.[3]

Chances of early diagnosis

An early diagnosis of osteoporosis and bone-strengthening measures are important to prevent bone fractures. The latter are not only painful, but can lead to permanent impairment of quality of life as well as restrictions on independence and mobility.[4]

The new app “Osteoporosis Risk Knowledge” can help to assess the individual risk of a bone break (fracture). The app was developed by the Professional Association for Orthopedics and Trauma Surgery (BVOU) for doctors and healthcare professionals, but also for use by patients. It can be downloaded free of charge from the Android or Apple app stores. Important: Always discuss the results with your doctor, as this is the only way further examinations can be carried out at an early stage. This includes, for example, measuring bone density (DXA measurement), which can be used to detect the onset of osteoporosis at an early stage and determine the risk of bone fractures.[5]

Strengthen bones, prevent fractures

Even after the diagnosis, the most important tips for strong bones are: stay active, eat a diet rich in calcium and get enough vitamin D. Gymnastics and strength training are ideal for strengthening bones. Calcium is an essential building block for the stability of the entire skeleton. If there is a lack of calcium, bones become porous and unstable.[6] Vitamin D is needed so that calcium can be incorporated into the bones. 80 to 90% of it is formed in the skin when exposed to sunlight.[7] In spring, summer and autumn, regular exposure to the outdoors can ensure sufficient vitamin D production.[8] Depending on the results of the examination, the doctor may recommend drug therapy in addition to these basic measures.[9]
