Recently, journalists from the German magazine Auto Motor und Sport decided to take a look at several Chinese electric models available on the European market. Cars from the largest manufacturers – BYD and Great Wall Motors – were selected for the test and then compared with their counterparts produced on the Old Continent – including: Cupra Born and the electric Opel Astra. The comparison results quite obviously showed that fears about the growing competition from Chinese cars may still be greatly exaggerated. According to German journalists, Chinese electric cars lost this battle.

An example would be the BYD Dolphin – a small compact car that is also the cheapest car in the manufacturer’s range. Although the price of the car undoubtedly deserves recognition, its design, workmanship and driving characteristics leave much to be desired. According to the German magazine, the vehicle is characterized by too soft suspension, driving instability, poor brakes, and the high beam lights basically do not work.

Cheap BYD also does not convince with technological solutions and software. The navigation system has problems with determining the appropriate route, and the on-board computer only shows theoretical range. Popular applications such as Amazon Music and Spotify do not work at all.

Ora 3 from Great Wall Motors did not much better in the test. Although this electric car looks very charming, its body elements are made of cheap and poorly fitted materials. Journalists emphasize that, as in the case of BYD, the GWM car also has problems with the steering and brakes. In addition, it is extremely difficult for taller drivers to find a suitable driving position.

Assistance systems, such as the lane keeping function, also have problems. In this case, the vehicle tends to slide dangerously towards the left edge. The test authors also did not have a good opinion about multimedia and software. The vehicle’s infotainment system is supposed to be complicated and slow to respond to commands.

Overall, both the BYD and Great Wall Motors compacts showed such a long list of faults and problems that the test winner – the Cupra Born – was classified with an advantage of almost 100 points. Auto Motor und Sport journalists briefly summarized the test results. In their opinion, European and Chinese electric cars are “a completely different world.”
