We know that roads are important for connecting one region to another. However, do you know where and how far the longest road in the world is?

According to Guinness World Records, the longest road in the world is the Pan-American Highway, which stretches for more than 30,000 kilometers. This road crosses 14 countries from Alaska to the southern tip of Argentina.

Along this road, there are all the main climate zones, such as tropical forests, arid deserts, boreal forests, grasslands, arctic tundra, mountains and various landscapes.

Construction of the Pan-American Highway

Quoted from IFL Science, the idea of ā€‹ā€‹building a Pan-American Highway was first proposed in 1923 by the United States (US). However, the Pan-American Highway convention was signed in 1937.

Signatory countries are Argentina, Bolivia, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Peru and the United States.

But progress is not fast. In the early 1970s, President Nixon boasted that a major highway across the continent would soon be completed, but many gaps and dead ends remained.

Despite this gap, the Pan-American Highway remains the Guinness World Record for “longest motorable road”.

Second Longest Highway in the World

A competitor of the Pan-American Highway for the world’s longest road is the Asian Highway 1 (AH1). This road stretches 20,557 km from the Japanese capital, Tokyo, to the Turkish-Bulgarian border, passing through Korea, China, Southeast Asia, Bangladesh, India, Pakistan and Iran.

However, this road is not sustainable because it crosses more than 942 kilometers of sea that separates Japan and South Korea. In addition, it is also impossible for most civilians to cross the ‘Demilitarized Zone’ that separates South Korea and North Korea.

Therefore, another competitor that can be compared to the longest highway in the world is Australia’s Highway 1. It is fully passable and the longest national road, circling the outer edge of the entire island for around 14,500 kilometers. Australia’s Highway 1 has also held the Guinness World Record for “longest continuous road”.

This road is also the only route to connect all regions and states of Australia, except the capital region.

Meanwhile, other roads which are among the longest in the world are the Trans-Siberian in Russia with a length of around 10,000 km, the Trans-Canada Road which passes through 10 provinces in Canada with a length of around 8,000 km, and China’s G010 National Highway which has a length of around 5,000 km.
