Three times is a charm – Review

There is, after an introduction that was spread over three weeks, the last Super card that Nvidia promised for the 40 series RTX cards. They must have thought ‘Save the best for last’, because the RTX 4080 Super is the most powerful Super card announced. There is only one card above the 4080 Super, and that is of course the RTX 4090. When it was introduced in October 2022, it had a recommended retail price of just under two thousand euros, so in that light the recommended retail price of 1119 euros for the RTX 4080 Super a bargain. By the way, fifteen months after its introduction, you can buy an RTX 4090 for just 1,876 euros, although you will have to be patient with delivery.

For many gamers, the RTX 4080, and by extension the new RTX 4080 Super, was de facto the top model with a somewhat manageable price: the 4080 can be purchased from 1150 euros and because the RTX 4080 Super has to replace that card, it is the Super available for the same price. That’s okay, because the 4080 Super is not exactly a huge step forward compared to the regular RTX 4080. The new Super version has 5 percent more CUDA cores, Tensor cores and RT cores, with the same number of ROPs. , the same memory in terms of bus, bandwidth and clocks, and even the same TDP of 320W. This makes the RTX 4080 Super, at least on paper, the Super card with the fewest upgrades: the 4070 Super received more than twenty percent more computing power, the 4070 Ti Super another ten percent and the 4080 Super only five percent.

We compare all newly released Super cards to their non-Super counterparts in the table below. The cheapest of the three was introduced first: the RTX 4070 Super has twenty percent extra cores for the same suggested retail price as the RTX 4070. The RTX 4070 Ti Super, in turn, is ten euros cheaper in terms of suggested retail price than the regular RTX 4070 Ti, but also only has ten percent more cores. The RTX 4080 Super has a recommended retail price that is no less than 350 euros lower than that of the regular RTX 4080, but in practice this amounts to two equally expensive cards. With a difference of only five percent more computing power, you hardly notice it and the Super is actually just the new 4080.

We compare the performance of the RTX 4080 Super against that of the regular RTX 4080 and its direct competitors, such as the RX 7900 XTX from AMD and the RTX 3090. Since the entire lineup of Super cards is now complete, we put also the RTX 4070 and its Super variant, and the RTX 4070 Ti and its Super variant, in the graphs. Nvidia’s Founders Edition was delayed, but Inno3D kindly made their RTX 4080 Super available for this review: thanks to Inno3D and Azerty.nl for sending it. Nvidia subsequently postponed the embargo so that we could test the Founders Edition in addition to the Inno3D card.
