Ireland Announces Strong Squad for the World Athletics Championships Tokyo 2025
The Irish team is set to make a significant impact at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo,Japan,from September 13-21. This year’s squad showcases a blend of seasoned veterans and rising stars, all aiming to compete at the highest level of international athletics. Several athletes arrive in Tokyo with recent accolades and impressive form. Sarah Healy, a European Indoor gold medalist in the 3000m, will focus her efforts on the 1500m, marking her third appearance at the World Championships. Mark English, fresh off a bronze medal in the 800m at a recent competition in the Netherlands, has also broken his own irish record in the event, clocking a remarkable 1:43.37.
Kate O’Connor, a standout in the heptathlon, is looking to build on a stellar 2025. She recently improved her Irish record to 6487 points, demonstrating her dedication and progress in the multi-discipline event. Sharlene Mawdsley, a 2024 European mixed 4x400m relay champion, will compete in both the women’s and mixed 4x400m relays, and also the individual 400m.
