“Tron: Ares” navigates a New Digital Landscape – And Hollywood’s AI Concerns
The upcoming release of ”Tron: ares” isn’t just a continuation of a beloved sci-fi franchise. It arrives at a pivotal moment, reflecting both the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence and the anxieties it’s sparking within the entertainment industry. The film’s producer, jeffrey Wigutow, recently discussed these themes, alongside the creative choices driving the new installment, in a conversation wiht IGN.
AI’s Growing Presence in Hollywood
The recent controversy surrounding Tilly Norwood, the world’s first “AI actress,” has ignited a fierce debate in Hollywood. Wigutow acknowledges this is just the beginning. He believes we’ll see more AI-driven performers emerge, necessitating industry-wide protocols.
“I think we’re going to see more of that,” Wigutow stated, “and I think the industry needs to prepare for it and to find protocol to deal with it.”
This isn’t a new concept, however. Wigutow recalls exploring AI themes during the early development of “Tron: Ares” (then simply “Tron 3”) back in 2012.But the context has drastically changed.
Back then, AI felt largely theoretical. Today, it’s a tangible force reshaping our world. This shift, Wigutow hopes, will make “Ares” more relatable to audiences.
Beyond the Grid: A Reflection of Our Digital Reality
“Tron: Ares” distinguishes itself from its predecessors by shifting the action out of the digital grid and into the real world. This creative decision mirrors the increasing integration of technology into our everyday lives.
Consider these key differences:
* 1982’s “Tron”: Focused almost entirely on a digital world, representing a futuristic concept.
* 2010’s “Tron: Legacy”: Still largely confined to the grid, though with glimpses of real-world impact.
* “Tron: Ares”: Brings the Tron aesthetic into our world, with Light Cycles tearing up freeways and downtown streets.
This reversal of the franchise’s usual setting is intentional. Wigutow describes it as a “refreshing, fun approach.” The goal is to deliver a visceral, fast-paced experience.
The Speed of Innovation & The Future of AI
While a digital Jared Leto super-soldier might still seem like science fiction, the speed of AI development is undeniable. Wigutow points to the rapid evolution from AI to Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) – human-level intelligence – as a key factor.
“Of course, that’s very movie-istic in a way,” he conceded, “but just the kind of explosive learning of AI to AGI…we’re really seeing that play out in front of us.”
This real-world acceleration informs the film’s narrative and pacing. “Ares” is designed to feel almost real-time, immersing you in the action.
A Visually Stunning Ride
Ultimately, Wigutow emphasizes that “Tron: Ares” aims to deliver the same core experience as its predecessors: “serious audio visual excitement.”
Whether you connect with the story or miss characters from “Legacy,” the film promises a thrilling ride. The advanced visuals and breakneck pace are designed to be a spectacle.
“I think what tron did in 1982, what it did in 2010, and what we’re hopefully doing in 2025 is delivering serious audio visual excitement,” Wigutow concluded.
“Tron: Ares” hits theaters October 10th.
