Plans for a $400 million White House ballroom faced an immediate legal roadblock after a D.C. district court ordered construction to halt, prompting a sharp response from Donald Trump on social media.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump rebranded the ongoing construction project as a “military center” crucial for national security. He criticized the court’s intervention, singling out two appellate judges and asserting that the security additions are necessary to protect future administrations and visitors from potential threats against the executive residence.
“Two Obama and Biden Appellate Court Judges just voted against the desperately needed Military Center, required for the National Security of Washington, D.C., and our Country, itself,” Trump wrote on the platform. He added that military and Secret Service officials view the ruling as a threat to national security.
Court Ruling Cites Limits of Executive Authority
The legal challenge centers on the scope of presidential power regarding the executive mansion and its surrounding grounds. In their decision, the D.C. court emphasized that the executive branch cannot unilaterally alter the historic complex without legislative authorization from Congress.
“Each President is a temporary tenant, not the owner, of the White House and its Executive Residence. The President has no … constitutionally assigned authority over that property, which is designed and maintained for the use of all Presidents, current and future, and for the American people,” the court stated in its ruling.
Planned Appeal to the Supreme Court
Responding to the injunction, Trump questioned the timing and standing of the plaintiffs who brought the lawsuit, while signaling his intent to take the matter to the highest court in the United States.
“Why didn’t they bring this case long prior to construction starting?” Trump wrote, calling the ruling unjust and stating that it must be overturned by the Supreme Court in its entirety.
