According to the Central Weather Administration, the island’s weather pattern is shifting as southwesterly winds and a southern low-pressure system take over, bringing a persistent week of wet conditions to central and southern regions.

Bebinca’s recent path through the Northwest Pacific has rewritten meteorological archives. Data from the Central Weather Administration shows that the storm set a new benchmark for typhoons carrying official warnings, generating at an easternmost longitude of 177 degrees. This surpasses the previous record held by Typhoon Allen in 1983, which formed at approximately 171.3 degrees east longitude and 13.1 degrees north latitude.

The storm’s intensity and lifespan matched its unusual formation point. Bebinca reached a peak intensity of 60 meters per second, tying it with Typhoon Sinlaku from April and Typhoon Bavi from July as the strongest typhoon of the year. Furthermore, as of the afternoon of August 10, Bebinca’s lifespan reached 14 days, eclipsing Typhoon Bavi’s previous duration of roughly 11.5 days to become the year’s longest-lasting storm.

Persistent Southwesterly Winds Prolong Heavy Rains Across Central and Southern Taiwan

Senior forecaster Chu Mei-lin of the Central Weather Administration explained that although Bebinca is weakening while moving northwestward toward China, Taiwan’s weather remains unsettled. Central and northern areas are experiencing afternoon thunderstorms, while central and southern parts face extended periods of rainfall due to moisture-laden southwesterly winds.

The administration forecasts that low-pressure influence and active southwest flow will keep moisture levels high. Central and southern areas will see continuous, localized showers or thunderstorms through midweek, with particularly heavy downpours expected in southern regions. Conditions are anticipated to remain unsettled through the end of the work week, as the low-pressure system shifts slightly northward between Friday and Sunday, increasing the frequency of precipitation nationwide and triggering afternoon thunderstorms outside the south.

Concurrent Storms in the Northwest Pacific and Warnings for Mountain and Coastal Zones

Meteorologists are also tracking a complex marine environment. The Northwest Pacific currently hosts a three typhoons and one low-pressure area alignment, which includes Bebinca alongside Typhoon Chan-hom, Typhoon Pulasan, and newly formed tropical depression TD18. While Pulasan currently poses no direct threat and TD18 tracks northward, Chan-hom is expected to shift northwest and then westward, potentially moving close to Japan by next week. Travelers bound for Japan are advised to monitor ongoing forecasts.

Domestically, authorities have issued strict warnings for vulnerable geography. Because prior storms left mountain soils saturated, the Central Weather Administration warns of ongoing risks of landslides, falling rocks, and swelling creeks. Short-duration heavy rainfall driven by southwesterly winds may bring lightning and strong gusts, prompting officials to advise the public against non-essential travel into high-risk mountainous terrain. Meanwhile, coastal residents from Chiayi southward, along the Keelung North Coast and eastern seaboard, must prepare for potential flooding in low-lying areas and seawater backflow during annual astronomical high tides expected from August 11 through August 15.
