Uganda’s mufti Champions Unity, Financial Empowerment for Muslim Leaders
Uganda’s top Islamic leader recently concluded a pivotal retreat focused on strengthening the nation’s Muslim community through unity, economic independence, and responsible civic engagement.The gathering brought together Imams from across the country, emphasizing a shared vision for the future.
Bridging Divides & Strengthening Foundations
A central theme of the retreat was reconciliation and collaboration. The Mufti actively encouraged a renewed focus on core islamic values, urging leaders to move beyond interpretations that create division, particularly between older and younger generations. He stressed the importance of fostering a cohesive community built on common ground.
Financial Independence: A Key to Resilience
Financial vulnerability can leave religious leaders susceptible to undue influence. The Mufti cautioned Imams against relying on potentially exploitative support from wealthy individuals with self-serving agendas.Instead, he passionately advocated for self-sustaining economic initiatives within the Muslim community.
This push for financial inclusion included a strong endorsement of Savings and Credit Cooperative Organizations (SACCOs).He urged participation in an existing,presidentially-backed SACCO initiative and officially launched five new SACCOs specifically for the districts of Kibuku,Sironko,Bududa,Butaleja,and Tororo.
Empowering Women & Youth in Leadership
The retreat also underscored the importance of inclusive leadership. It directly supported the implementation of the uganda Muslim Supreme Council’s amended constitution, which actively promotes the inclusion of both women and youth in key leadership positions. Leaders were encouraged to actively collaborate with women and youth leaders within their communities.
Accessing Government Resources & Civic Duty
Many religious leaders might potentially be unaware of available government programs designed to alleviate poverty. The Mufti urged Imams to proactively seek out and leverage these resources for the benefit of their congregations. He emphasized the need for awareness and engagement with existing poverty alleviation initiatives.
Peaceful Participation in Elections
With upcoming elections on the horizon, the Mufti delivered a crucial message of peace and responsible citizenship. He called for discipline and restraint,urging imams to guide their followers toward peaceful participation and contribute to national stability. Your role as a community leader is vital in ensuring a smooth and democratic process.
