UK Prime Minister to Visit China, Emphasizing Economic Opportunities
London – January 27, 2026 – British Prime Minister Keir Starmer affirmed today that the United kingdom cannot overlook the significant economic opportunities presented by China. Speaking in a televised interview wiht Bloomberg News ahead of his anticipated trip to Beijing - the first by a British Prime Minister in eight years – Starmer stated the visit will be a substantial possibility for british businesses to grow and expand.
Responding to questions regarding potential impacts on relations with the United States, Starmer explained, “I am often asked to simply choose between countries… we have a very close relationship with the United States – of course we want that – and we will maintain commercial activity while considering security and defense dimensions.”
The British government recently approved the construction of a large-scale Chinese embassy in London, a decision that has drawn criticism from politicians and experts.
Starmer is scheduled to depart for China later today on a visit lasting until January 31st. Some observers characterize the trip as a “reset” in relations between the UK and China.
