NATO to establish AI-Powered Automated Defense Zone on Eastern Flank
NATO is planning to create a heavily fortified, largely automated defense zone along its eastern flank, designed to deter and, if necessary, defeat potential aggression. The initiative, which leverages artificial intelligence (AI) and advanced sensor technology, aims to enhance the alliance’s defensive capabilities in response to evolving security challenges, especially in light of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. The plan is expected to be implemented, if possible, by the end of 2027.
The “Zone of Automation” Concept
The core of this new defense strategy is a “zone of automation,” a geographically defined area equipped with advanced technologies to detect, track, and counter potential adversaries with minimal human intervention.
