UN approves resolution that could make Palestine a member state –

The United Nations General Assembly is considering admitting Palestine as its latest member. This decision was taken in a vote held this Friday, the 10th, amid growing clashes between Israel and Palestinian groups in the Gaza Strip.

The resolution had 143 votes in favor, nine against and 25 abstentions. In response, Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz condemned the approval of the UN General Assembly resolution, which calls on the organization’s Security Council to reconsider the Palestinian Authority’s membership in the United Nations.

“The absurd decision taken today at the General Assembly highlights the structural bias of the UN and the reasons why, under the leadership of UN Secretary-General António Guterres, it has turned into an irrelevant institution,” said Katz. He further stated that “the message that the UN is sending to our suffering region is that violence pays.”

Katz said the decision would further complicate negotiations surrounding the release of hostages held in Gaza, providing “a breath of fresh air for Hamas.”

Approved by the entity, the resolution grants Palestine “new rights and privileges”, which represents a significant step in the international recognition of the region’s political status. The measure is taken at a time of intensification of conflicts in the region, with attacks and counter-attacks between the parties involved.

The inclusion of Palestine as a full member of the UN has been the subject of debate and controversy for years, reflecting the complexity and sensitivity of the conflict in the Middle East. This vote could potentially have profound implications for regional and international relations, as well as influencing efforts for peace and stability in the region.
