German Foreign Minister Warns of Eroding Trust in Global Institutions
At the World Economic Forum in Davos,German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock warned that multilateral institutions – long considered vital for fostering global trust – are facing unprecedented strain due to escalating conflicts and a decline in respect for international law.She questioned who now serves as a broker of trust in a world increasingly marked by division.
“Who brokers trust?” she asked. “In ordinary times, there would be a simple answer: multilateral institutions like the United Nations.” however,she emphasized,”these are not ordinary times.”
Baerbock highlighted that the world is currently experiencing more conflicts than at any point in recent history. She noted a growing hesitancy among some Member States to take principled action, particularly since the beginning of 2024.
“Voices that were once outspoken in their support for all three pillars of the United Nations Charter – peace and security, sustainable progress, and human rights – are falling increasingly silent as these pillars erode,” she stated.
“The UN is not only under pressure but under outright attack.“

Baerbock stressed that trust is fundamentally dependent on truth and shared facts, elements she argued are increasingly undermined by intentional disinformation.
“Without facts, you can’t have truth. Without truth, you can’t have trust,” she
