UN officials estimate it will take 14 years to clean up Gaza, Palestine, from debris caused by Israeli attacks. The cleanup includes disposing of unexploded ordnance.

Reported Saturday (27/4/2024), an Israeli military attack which was claimed to be in response to Hamas in Gaza has devastated much of the narrow coastal region of 2.3 million people.

Most civilians are homeless, starving and at risk of disease. A senior officer at the United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS), Pehr Lodhammar, told a briefing in Geneva that the war had left around 37 million tonnes of debris in urban and densely populated areas.

He said that while it was impossible to determine the exact number of unexploded ordnance found in Gaza, it was estimated that it would take 14 years under certain conditions to clear the rubble, including debris from destroyed buildings.

“We know that there is typically a failure rate of at least 10% of ground service munitions that are fired and fail to function,” he said.

“We are talking about 14 years of work with 100 trucks,” he continued.

Hamas previously carried out a surprise attack on southern Israel that killed 1,200 people, according to Israeli estimates. Hamas is believed to still be holding 129 of the 253 hostages it has held since October 7, 2023.

Israel then carried out attacks on Gaza and killed 34,305 Palestinians and injured 77,293 people since October 7, 2023.
