US President Donald Trump said Wednesday that he was told “on good authority” that the killing of Iranian protesters has “stopped”, and Tehran indicated that there was “no plan for hanging” protestors. The UN Security Council will meet Thursday afternoon to discuss the situation in Iran. Follow our liveblog for all the latest developments.

India urges citizens to leave Iran amid protest crackdown

India’s foreign ministry has urged its citizens to leave Iran, where rights groups say a crackdown on mass protests has killed and led to the arrest of thousands of people.

The ministry estimates there are usually around 10,000 Indian citizens in Iran.

“Indian nationals who are currently in Iran (students, pilgrims, businesspersons and tourists) are advised to leave Iran by available means of transport,” the Indian embassy in Tehran said in a social media post late on Wednesday.

Iran reopens airspace after brief closure amid US tensions

Iran reopened its airspace after a near five-hour closure amid concerns over possible military action between the United States and Iran, which forced airlines to cancel, reroute or delay some flights.

Iran closed its airspace to all flights except international services to and from the country with official permission at 5:15 p.m. ET (2215 GMT) on Wednesday, according to a notice on the US Federal Aviation Administration website.

The notice was removed shortly before 10 p.m. ET, or 0300 GMT, according to tracking service Flightradar24, which showed five flights from Iranian carriers Mahan Air, Yazd Airways and AVA Airlines among the first to resume flying over the country.

UN Security Council to hold briefing on Iran at US request

The UN Security Council is scheduled to meet on Thursday afternoon for “a briefing on the situation in Iran,” according to a spokesperson for the Somali presidency.

The scheduling note said the briefing was requested by the United States.

  • During an event at the White House, Trump said he had been told on “good authority” that the “killing in Iran is stopping. It’s stopped…and there’s no plan for executions,” without providing further details.
  • The head of Iran’s judiciary signaled that there would be fast trials and executions ahead for those detained in nationwide protests despite a warning from US President Donald Trump.

  • The nationwide shutdown of the internet by authorities in Iran, which activists fear is aimed at masking the true scale of a crackdown on protests, has now lasted over 132 hours, according to a monitor.

  • Iranian security forces have killed at least 3,428 protesters in a crackdown on demonstrations, the Norway-based Iran Human Rights (IHR) NGO said on Wednesday, adding that more than 10,000 people had also been arrested.
