It has now been almost two years since on February 22, Amsterdam was captivated by a hostage situation in the heart of the city: at the Apple Store on Leidseplein. An event that ultimately captivated the whole of the Netherlands for hours. Roos Gerritsen made a documentary about it, with never-before-seen images made with a bodycam of the hostage taker.

In this way, the viewer becomes a witness to the motivations and dark and disturbed inner world of hostage taker Abdel A. and the victims. The conversations with the police negotiator can also be followed minute by minute and provide insight into what his demands are and how he sees the outcome.

Videoland and AT5 have joined forces to make a reconstruction of this evening. The Hostage In The Apple Store can be seen on Thursday, February 22 from 8 p.m. on AT5 and can be streamed simultaneously on Videoland.

AT5 was given access to unique images and audio recordings of the hostage situation. The analysis and reconstruction of the material took a year and resulted in this oppressive documentary, in which Apple employee Alex also speaks. During the entire hostage situation, Alex hid in a closet with three customers, including a mother and daughter, and managed to secure the lives of these people by acting calmly and heroically.

Gerritsen also speaks with the police, EOD (Defense Explosive Ordnance Disposal Service) and a victim who was on another floor of the building and witnessed the hostage situation. She follows in detail the evening that is etched in the memories of many people and that ultimately came to an end thanks to a bottle of water, a brave hostage and the intervention of the police.
