It was in January that Universal removed all videos linked to its artists’ music from the platform, after negotiations between the parties on a new agreement broke down.

In a press release, which NME has taken notice ofrepresentatives of Universal Music write that the new agreement means, among other things, better compensation conditions for artists and songwriters.

“The new chapter in our relationship with Tiktok focuses on the value of music, the human creation and the well-being of the creative collective,” says label head Lucian Grainge in the press release.

However, it is not known when the new agreement will come into force.

In the negotiations that broke up last winter, Universal demanded better payment from Tiktok for the music rights, claiming that Tiktok was trying to build a music-based business without paying real value for the music.

Tiktok responded by saying it was “disappointing that Universal Music Group has put its own greed above the interests of its artists”.

Universal, along with the other music industry giants Sony and Warner, dominate music publishing worldwide. The artist catalog includes names such as Drake, Katy Perry, Ariana Grande, Lana del Rey, Metallica and The Beatles. Swedish artists on the company include Abba, Hov1, Veronica Maggio, Tove Lo and Ghost.

Tiktok has built a large part of its popularity precisely by letting users set their posts to music with popular hit songs.
