A soldier United States of America (AS) was arrested while visiting his girlfriend in the port city of Vladivostok, Russia. The 34-year-old soldier is accused of stealing from his girlfriend, and is currently in the custody of Russian authorities.

As reported Associated PressTuesday (7/5/2024), a number of US official sources, who declined to be named, revealed that the soldier detained in Russia was named Gordon Black (34), had the rank of Staff Sergeant and was assigned to South Korea (Carousel).

Black was said to be in the process of being repatriated to Fort Cavazos in Texas when this detention occurred.

According to US officials, Black, who is married, apparently went to Russia to meet his long-time girlfriend. Black’s detention further complicates relations between the US and Russia, which have been strained as the war drags on Ukraine recent years.

US Army spokeswoman Cynthia Smith confirmed that a US soldier was being held in Vladivostok, which is home to Russia’s main military and commercial port in Pacific waters. Smith said the US soldier had been detained since Thursday (2/5) last week on charges of committing a criminal offense.

He added that Russian authorities had informed the US government about the detention, and that the US Army had informed the soldier’s family.

“The US Department of State is providing appropriate consular support to troops in Russia,” Smith said in a statement.
