Utah Man Arrested for Stabbing Muslim Worker in Hate Crime Attack

Utah Mall Stabbing Investigation

A 48-year-old Utah man has been arrested and booked into the Salt Lake County jail following a targeted stabbing of a Muslim mall worker that authorities are investigating as a hate crime. The suspect, identified as Peter Michael Larsen, allegedly told investigators he chose the victim because of his religion and declared that he “intends to kill Muslims.”

The incident occurred on Monday at the Valley Fair Mall in West Valley City. According to police, Larsen approached the victim—identified by friends as Sohail—at his work kiosk. Witnesses and reports indicate that Larsen engaged the victim in conversation, asking where he was from and whether he was Muslim. After the victim confirmed his faith and turned to retrieve a bottle of water for the suspect, Larsen allegedly began the attack.

Larsen is being held on suspicion of attempted murder and prohibited dangerous weapon conduct. In a booking affidavit, police stated that Larsen presents “a substantial danger to the public” due to his “violent actions, ideologies and pre-planned mass casualty events.”

Victim Remains in Critical Condition

The victim, an Indian man who worked at the kiosk, sustained 15 stab wounds during the assault. According to court documents, officers arriving at the scene found the victim “bleeding profusely” with multiple wounds across his body. He was transported to a hospital, where he remains in critical condition after undergoing multiple surgeries.

Friends and family have highlighted the personal impact of the violence. Luna Nunez, a friend of the victim who witnessed the attack, described intervening by throwing objects, including shoes and a chair, in an attempt to stop the stabbing. “I was scared for his life. I was just scared. I thought he was going to die,” Nunez told reporters.

A GoFundMe page established to assist the victim’s family notes that he is the sole provider for his wife and two children and does not have health insurance. Adnan Mohammed, the victim’s manager, praised the bystanders who intervened, stating, “There’s heroes, who saved his life, who still exist. Humanity still exists.”

Suspect’s History and Legal Status

This is not Larsen’s first encounter with law enforcement regarding violent behavior. In 2022, police responded to his residence after he set his yard on fire and threatened to shoot responding firefighters. During that incident, Larsen was armed with a shotgun and shots were fired. He served a prison sentence for that offense and was released in January 2025.

Following the mall attack, Larsen was also treated at a hospital for injuries sustained when bystanders subdued him and held him on the ground until police arrived.

Broader Context of Anti-Muslim Sentiment

The attack has drawn swift condemnation from Muslim advocacy groups, including the Council on American-Islamic Relations. Imam Shuaib Din of the Utah Islamic Center, who has been in contact with the victim’s family, emphasized that the attack has left the broader community feeling vulnerable. “On the surface, it seems like it’s against one individual, but it’s not that one person who is a victim. The whole entire community is a victim because now they all feel unsafe,” Din said.

Civil rights advocates have expressed ongoing concern regarding anti-Muslim hate crimes in the United States. According to these groups, such sentiment has remained a persistent issue since the September 11, 2001, attacks, with recent spikes in activity attributed to a variety of factors:

* Anti-immigration rhetoric
* The rise of white supremacist groups
* Tensions linked to the war in Gaza

The stabbing follows other recent violent incidents targeting Muslims in the U.S., including the 2023 fatal stabbing of a six-year-old boy in Illinois and a 2026 shooting at a San Diego mosque that resulted in five deaths.
