Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has shattered the Indian Premier League record for the most powerplay runs in a single season, reaching 502 runs during the 2026 tournament. According to Navbharat Times, the young batsman surpassed David Warner’s previous 2016 benchmark while anchoring Rajasthan Royals through a stellar campaign.
Rajasthan Royals batter Vaibhav Sooryavanshi wrote his name into the tournament record books during the 2026 season by becoming the first player in IPL history to surpass 500 runs inside the powerplay during a single campaign, according to Navbharat Times. Playing his 16th match of the season, Sooryavanshi pushed his powerplay tally to 502 runs.
Shattering David Warner’s Ten-Year Benchmark
The milestone arrived during the Qualifier-2 fixture against Gujarat Titans at Mullanpur, where Sooryavanshi contributed 31 runs off 17 deliveries inside the first six overs after teammates Yashasvi Jaiswal and Dhruv Jurel fell early in the innings, as reported by Navbharat Times. That effort vaulted him past the previous single-season powerplay record held by David Warner.
In 2016, Warner scored 467 runs in the powerplay for Sunrisers Hyderabad during a campaign that culminated in an IPL championship title. Behind Warner on the historical leaderboard are Travis Head with 402 runs in 2024, Sai Sudharsan with 402 runs in 2025, and Adam Gilchrist with 382 runs in 2009, based on data published by Navbharat Times.
Explosive Scoring Rate and Boundary Dominance
Sooryavanshi maintained a staggering 232 strike rate across his powerplay appearances during the 2026 tournament, being dismissed six times within the opening six overs, according to Navbharat Times. Of his 502 total powerplay runs, an overwhelming 452 came exclusively from boundaries.
Navbharat Times notes that the left-hander struck 47 fours and 44 sixes during the powerplay alone. His aggressive strokeplay also drove him past the 700-run threshold for the entire 2026 season, making him the first batter to reach that milestone while holding onto the Orange Cap, alongside breaking the record for the most sixes hit in a single IPL season.
Late-Stage Heroics and Tournament Context
The record-breaking surge follows a series of dominant performances, including an elimination match against Sunrisers Hyderabad where Sooryavanshi smashed 97 runs from just 29 balls, narrowly missing what would have been the fastest century in IPL history, according to Navbharat Times reporting.
