The political landscape in Venezuela is undergoing a significant shift, yet the euphoria surrounding Nicolás Maduro‘s potential departure is tempered by deep-seated concerns about what comes next. For years, many Venezuelans were willing too consider various compromises to address the nation’s crisis; however, the increasing influence of the United States in shaping decisions made by the Caracas authorities is now widely perceived as a national humiliation, irrespective of political affiliation. This sentiment reflects a growing belief that 26 years of Chavismo have ultimately failed to deliver on their promises.
The Shadow of Past Abuses and the Pursuit of Accountability
While the current political developments are capturing headlines, it’s crucial not to lose sight of the ongoing need to address past human rights violations. In 2019, the United Nations Human Rights Council established the self-reliant international Fact-Finding Mission to investigate allegations of human rights abuses committed in Venezuela sence 2014. The experts’ reports have meticulously documented severe and systematic human rights violations, including crimes against humanity perpetrated against the Venezuelan people.
Following the detention of Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, the mission’s president, Marta Valiñas, emphasized the importance of maintaining focus on thes abuses and pursuing accountability from all those responsible, extending beyond the highest levels of the Chavista government to include members of the security forces.
The investigation details disturbing patterns of arbitrary detentions, enforced disappearances, torture, and sexual and gender-based violence - abuses that coudl continue amidst the current instability.These allegations are currently being investigated by the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague, marking the first such case brought before the court in Latin America. Ideally, this is where Maduro and other key figures within the Chavista regime should be held accountable for their actions.
